History in Iran

Iran lies on an old crossroads between Mesopotamia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, South Asia, and the Persian Gulf. Settled societies and powerful states existed there long before the country received its modern political form. The Medes and the Achaemenid Persian Empire are central to ancient Iranian history. The Achaemenids governed a vast, diverse realm through provinces, roads, tribute, and local administration. After Alexander of Macedon's conquest, Hellenistic rulers controlled much of the region. The Parthian Empire later became a major power linking eastern and western trade routes. The Sasanian Empire built a centralized Iranian state and supported Zoroastrian institutions. Its long rivalry with the Roman and Byzantine worlds shaped western Asia. Arab Muslim armies defeated the Sasanians in the seventh century. Islam gradually became dominant, while Persian language and cultural traditions survived and influenced the wider Islamic world. Iran was later ruled by several Iranian, Turkic, and Mongol dynasties. These periods brought destruction in some places but also new political systems, cities, scholarship, literature, and art. The Safavid dynasty made Twelver Shia Islam a defining institution of the state. This helped distinguish Iran politically and religiously from neighboring Sunni empires. Under the Qajar dynasty, Iran faced internal weakness and growing Russian and British pressure. The Constitutional Revolution introduced a constitution and parliament and became a lasting symbol of accountable government. The Pahlavi period brought centralization, state-led modernization, nationalism, and rapid social change, together with political repression. The revolution of 1979 ended the monarchy and established the Islamic Republic. War with Iraq, social change, political conflict, and connections with the Iranian diaspora shaped the following decades. Iranians continue to interpret this history in different and sometimes competing ways.
