Art in Iraq

Art in Iraq includes visual art, architecture, music, poetry, storytelling, theater, film, dance, calligraphy, textiles, metalwork, woodwork, and ceramics. Forms and meanings differ across regions and communities. Ancient sites contain sculpture, reliefs, seals, architecture, and written objects from Mesopotamian societies. These works are archaeological heritage and are not the same as all later Iraqi art. Islamic art contributed calligraphy, geometric and plant designs, manuscript traditions, mosque architecture, and decorated objects. Christian, Yazidi, Mandaean, and other communities also maintain distinct artistic and sacred traditions. Poetry has a strong place in public and private expression. Classical forms coexist with modern verse, spoken performance, song lyrics, and poetry in Arabic, Kurdish, Syriac, Turkmen, and other languages. Iraqi maqam is an important urban musical tradition associated especially with Baghdad. Rural music, Kurdish music, religious recitation, popular songs, and newer styles add to a much broader soundscape. Modern Iraqi visual artists have combined local symbols, calligraphy, abstraction, realism, political reflection, and international techniques. Migration and exile have also shaped artistic themes and networks. Crafts often connect beauty with daily use. Carpets, woven goods, jewelry, copperware, carved wood, pottery, and decorated household objects can carry regional skills and family knowledge. Conflict, censorship, displacement, damaged cultural institutions, and the illicit loss of heritage have limited artistic life. Artists nevertheless continue to teach, preserve, perform, document, and create new work.
