Labor law in Iraq

Labor law in Iraq mainly regulates paid work in the private and mixed sectors. Government employees usually fall under separate public-service rules. An employment relationship can exist even when paperwork is incomplete, but a written contract makes the agreed job, wage, workplace, and duties easier to prove. The actual facts of the work can matter as much as the contract's label. Employers generally have duties concerning wages, working conditions, records, and workplace safety. Workers must perform agreed tasks, follow lawful instructions, and respect legitimate workplace rules. Labor protections address matters such as working time, rest, leave, equal treatment, and protection of certain workers. Exact rights can depend on the worker's status, sector, contract, and applicable federal or regional framework. Employment may end by agreement, expiry of a fixed arrangement, resignation, dismissal, or another legally recognized reason. The employer's reason, the procedure used, and evidence of payments can become central in a dispute. Workplace injuries and social-security matters can involve reporting and administrative steps beyond the employment contract. Prompt documentation of the event, medical care, and employer notification is practically important. Labor disputes may first be discussed inside the workplace or presented to a labor authority. If unresolved, a labor court or another competent body may examine contracts, payroll records, attendance records, and witness evidence. Foreign workers can face both labor and immigration requirements. Permission to live in Iraq does not automatically establish permission to work, and an employment agreement does not replace required immigration approval.
