Unemployment in Ireland

Unemployment can follow dismissal, redundancy, the end of temporary work or a first attempt to enter the labour market. It may be brief, repeated or long-lasting. Ireland's social welfare system includes jobseeker supports for people who meet the relevant conditions. Some supports are linked to social insurance records, while others consider a household's financial circumstances. Intreo is the main public-facing service associated with employment support and social welfare assistance for jobseekers. It can connect a person with claims, job-search help, training and return-to-work services. A claimant may need to show that they are unemployed, capable of work, available for suitable work and genuinely seeking employment. Personal circumstances can affect which form of support is appropriate. Losing work can also affect housing costs, family finances, routines and confidence. An early budget and a regular job-search plan can reduce pressure. Jobseekers can use direct applications, recruitment agencies, personal networks, public employment services and training routes. A focused search is often more useful than sending the same application everywhere. Redundancy and unemployment are related but different ideas. Redundancy concerns a role that is no longer needed, while unemployment describes the person's situation after work ends. A return to work may involve a new occupation, reduced hours, training or self-employment. Before changing status, a person should understand how the new arrangement affects income, responsibilities and support.
