Italy’s school system begins with services for young children and scuola dell’infanzia, or preschool. Preschool supports development and preparation for school but is distinct from compulsory primary education. Scuola primaria is primary school. It builds foundations in Italian, mathematics, science, history, geography, arts, physical education, and other areas through a broad common curriculum. Scuola secondaria di primo grado is lower secondary school. Students continue a shared general education and complete this stage before entering a more specialised upper pathway. Upper secondary school is called scuola secondaria di secondo grado. Its main school forms include licei, istituti tecnici, and istituti professionali, each with different balances of general, theoretical, technical, and practical study. A liceo provides a strongly academic programme in a particular orientation. An istituto tecnico combines general subjects with technical and economic fields, while an istituto professionale has a stronger vocational and practical focus. Regional Istruzione e Formazione Professionale, or IeFP, offers another vocational route. It is connected to regional training systems and should not be treated as simply another name for a state upper secondary school. Assessment takes place through classwork, tests, teacher evaluation, and examinations at important transition points. Schools communicate progress through reports and meetings, and families usually play an active role. Public schools form the main system, while recognised non-state schools also exist. Teaching language, local services, timetables, and support arrangements can differ, especially in autonomous areas and multilingual communities. School offers social development, qualifications, and routes into work or further study. A family’s first steps should be to identify the correct school stage, understand local enrolment procedures, and compare the educational pathways realistically.
