Archaeological evidence from Ahouakro and Tiassalé includes megaliths, grinding areas, tool traces and Neolithic remains, although access and local protection rules vary. In the northern regions, Mandé and Gur connections, Mali and Songhai influences, trans-Saharan trade, Islamisation and migration shaped medieval history. Between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, Sudanese-style mosques in places such as Tengréla, Kouto, Kong and Samatiguila developed from local earth and wood techniques combined with Mandé and Islamic influences; UNESCO recognised eight of these mosques in 2021, and they remain religious, teaching and community spaces. European coastal contacts began around 1470–1471, first involving Portugal, while later histories of ivory trading, enslavement, warfare, debt bondage and hereditary slavery require separate treatment rather than one simplified account. France established a protectorate in 1843 and an autonomous colony by decree on 10 March 1893. Grand-Bassam served as the first colonial capital from 1893 to 1900, followed by Bingerville and Abidjan as administrative centres within French West Africa. Colonial rule reshaped borders, labour systems, plantations, rubber and cocoa production, missions, education, local resistance and cooperation. Political organisation expanded in 1945 and 1946, forced labour and the Code de l’indigénat were abolished, and Côte d’Ivoire became sovereign on 7 August 1960 under Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who remained president until 1993. The PDCI-RDA dominated politics until the return to a multiparty system in 1990, while cocoa and coffee, investment, migration and urbanisation supported the so-called miracle ivoirien and also intensified disputes over land, citizenship and Ivoirité. After Houphouët-Boigny’s death on 7 December 1993, a military coup occurred in December 1999 under Robert Guéï, followed by rebellion and territorial division from 2002, the 2007 Ouagadougou Agreement, the disputed 2010 presidential election and post-election violence in 2010–2011. The Historic Town of Grand-Bassam, inscribed by UNESCO in 2012, documents colonial planning, trade, administration, residential areas, the N’zima village and the independence movement. Research in Côte d’Ivoire combines the Archives nationales de Côte d’Ivoire, museums, universities such as Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny, heritage institutions, archaeology, libraries, oral history and international records from UNESCO, the UN and the ICC. Colonial archives reflect administrative interests and should be compared with local oral histories, linguistic evidence, community memories, archaeological findings and legal records; archive and museum access, fees, opening times and permissions depend on the institution and collection.
