Language in Côte d’Ivoire

French is the official state language of Côte d’Ivoire and shapes public administration, law, public documents and the national education system. Around 60 local languages are used in families, communities, regional cultures and parts of the media, but they are not documented as coequal official languages. Dioula or Malinké serves particularly in the north and in trade as a regional lingua franca, while Nouchi mainly shapes urban youth and popular culture.
