History in Jamaica

Jamaica’s history has been shaped by Taíno society, Spanish and British colonization, African enslavement, resistance, emancipation and independence. British plantation rule transformed the island’s population, economy and political institutions. Jamaica became independent from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962 while retaining many institutions inherited from the colonial period.
