Politics in Jamaica

Politics in Jamaica operates through a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy based on the Westminster model. The state includes the executive government, Parliament, courts, ministries, agencies, local authorities and oversight bodies. Elections choose representatives for the House of Representatives and usually determine which party forms the government.

State

Jamaica is a sovereign Commonwealth state with a constitutional monarchy and a Westminster-Whitehall system. Executive government, Parliament and the independent Judiciary exercise separate public functions. Central ministries and agencies operate alongside 14 local authorities, while courts, oversight bodies and security services provide further state functions.

Elections

Jamaica uses a parliamentary electoral system in which voters directly elect 63 members of the House of Representatives from single-member constituencies under first-past-the-post rules. The Senate has 21 appointed members, while general elections usually determine which party forms the government and nominates the Prime Minister. The independent Electoral Commission of Jamaica oversees registration, election administration, boundaries, voter identification, election staff and campaign-finance supervision.
