Crime in Japan includes both opportunistic acts and planned deception. An orderly environment can reduce some risks, but it should not lead people to ignore warning signs. A kōban is often the first local point for reporting theft, harassment, suspicious behavior, or lost property. Larger or more complex cases may be handled at a full police station. Petty theft can occur in stations, shops, events, hotels, and nightlife areas. Keep wallets, phones, passports, and bags controlled rather than leaving them unattended to reserve a seat. Fraud may arrive by phone, text, email, social media, fake websites, or personal approaches. Common pressure methods include urgency, secrecy, impersonation, unusual payment requests, and claims that immediate action will prevent punishment. In nightlife districts, street solicitors known as yobikomi may invite customers into bars, clubs, or other venues. Following unknown solicitors can lead to unclear prices, pressure, or unexpectedly large bills. Harassment can happen on crowded trains, streets, at work, or in social settings. The person affected can move toward staff or other passengers, speak clearly, preserve evidence when safe, and seek police or support services. Japan's lost-property system is widely used, and missing belongings are not automatically evidence of theft. Check with facility staff and police while also protecting accounts or documents that could be misused. Foreign residents and visitors should be cautious if someone claims that police, immigration, a bank, or a delivery company requires secret or immediate payment. Verify the request through an independently found official contact method. After an incident, personal safety comes first. Record the place, time, descriptions, messages, receipts, witnesses, and property details, then report promptly and ask for language help if needed.
