School in Japan

Japan's school system has elementary school, lower secondary school, and upper secondary school. These are commonly called shogakko, chugakko, and koko in everyday Japanese. Elementary school normally covers six school years, followed by three years of lower secondary school. These stages form compulsory education, and public-school placement is generally connected to the family's registered residence. Upper secondary school usually requires an application and selection process. Schools may be academic, vocational, general, full-time, part-time, or correspondence-based. The school year is divided into terms and includes lessons, ceremonies, events, and holidays. Exact calendars and daily schedules vary between schools and local authorities. Students learn subjects such as Japanese, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, arts, and foreign languages. Moral education, class activities, and integrated learning also support social and practical development. School life often includes cleaning shared spaces, eating school lunch at many compulsory schools, serving class roles, and joining events. These routines teach cooperation and responsibility as well as academic knowledge. Bukatsu are school club activities, especially common in secondary school. Sports, music, arts, science, and other clubs can build friendships and skills, but they may also require substantial time. Children who are new to Japanese may need language assistance and help understanding school notices. Families should communicate with the school office about placement, meals, health needs, learning support, and daily routines. Public, national, and private schools may differ in admissions, costs, educational approach, and support. Families should judge a school by the child's needs rather than by one label alone.
