Crime in Jordan

Crime in Jordan is handled mainly through the police and wider Public Security Directorate, with courts and other authorities dealing with later stages. Victims and witnesses may be asked for identification, a description, evidence, and a formal statement. Opportunistic theft can occur in crowded streets, markets, transport areas, vehicles, or shared accommodation. Phones, wallets, bags, passports, and unattended luggage should be kept secure and out of easy reach. Homes and vehicles benefit from basic physical security. Lock doors and windows, avoid leaving valuables visible, control access to keys, and choose well-lit parking or entrances when possible. Fraud can involve money exchange, purchases, rentals, employment offers, investments, impersonation, or demands for urgent payment. Written terms, receipts, verified identities, and time to check a claim help prevent rushed decisions. Cybercrime includes stolen accounts, false links, payment tricks, identity misuse, and threats involving private material. Strong unique passwords, multi-factor authentication, software updates, and cautious sharing provide useful protection. Harassment, stalking, threats, domestic abuse, and sexual violence are safety issues and may also be crimes. A person in danger should move to a safer place, contact someone trustworthy, seek police or medical help, and preserve relevant evidence when safe. Disputes can become worse when people argue publicly, threaten retaliation, or try to recover property alone. Calm withdrawal, witnesses, written records, and formal reporting are generally safer than confrontation. A police report creates an official record but may require time, translation, and follow-up. Visitors may also need to contact their embassy or consulate, insurer, bank, accommodation provider, or employer depending on what was lost or what harm occurred.
