Study in Kiribati

The USP Kiribati Campus in Teaoraereke, South Tarawa, has provided local higher education through the University of the South Pacific regional network since 2006. Common fields include English, Computer Science, Education, Science, Management and Accounting. Postgraduate study and overseas study are also available through USP and regional partners, but each programme has its own entry requirements and availability. Students apply through the USP online application system. The application normally requires general and programme-specific evidence, such as school completion, certified transcripts, English ability and academic records. Completing school does not automatically secure admission. Foundation study or UU114 English for Academic Purposes may be relevant where an applicant needs additional academic preparation. External qualifications and credit transfers are assessed case by case. Study may be face-to-face, through Distance and Flexible Learning, in an arranged cohort or through Flexi-School. The 2026 USP Prospectus recorded 398 Kiribati students, with 98% studying by distance according to 2024 data. The campus serves South Tarawa directly. Applicants from outer islands usually need to plan for reliable connectivity, electricity, an examination site and possible travel. Face-to-face capacity is more limited than distance provision, so the current campus guidance and programme listing determine what is available. USP fees for Kiribati in the 2026 flexible print and online schedule are stated in Australian dollars per course. Examples include AUS$350 for a 100-level general course, AUS$510 for accounting, AUS$525 for computing science, AUS$370 for education and AUS$580 for engineering. A yearly General Services Fee of AUS$63 is listed. Late-payment fees after the first, second and third four-week periods are AUS$118, AUS$142 and AUS$189. Application and registration charges, learning materials, a device, data, transport, accommodation, living costs and examination travel can add to the total. USP bursaries and scholarships include the Student Bursary Scheme, Tower Scholarship and Chinese Ambassador Scholarship. The Government of Kiribati Public Service Office offers the GOK In-Service Scholarship for eligible public servants. The scheme generally requires Kiribati citizenship, about three continuous years of public-sector service, a programme aligned with the Academic In-service Priority List, English and computer evidence, a university offer and certified original documents. Published conditions include age caps of 45 for undergraduate study and 50 for postgraduate study. Foreign awards circulated by the Public Service Office may include opportunities connected with India, China, Japan, Thailand or the Commonwealth. Each award can set its own allowance, bond, return or service obligation, progress reporting and repayment conditions. After admission, students enrol through USP SOLS. A bachelor's student may register for up to four courses per semester or eight courses per year, while full-time study means at least 75% of the standard workload. Prerequisites, holds and add-course or withdrawal deadlines affect registration. Students must follow academic integrity, assessment, payment, conduct and contact-data requirements. USP procedures cover programme or campus changes, credit transfer, grade appeals, grievances, transcripts and qualification verification. Sponsored students generally need sponsor approval before changing their programme. Kiribati Campus administration, Student Academic Services, the library, IT services, learning support and the student association provide assistance. USP forms cover fee waivers, instalment plans, assessment consideration, grievances, disability disclosure, transcripts and qualification verification. Students who need access support should disclose it early. Distance learners should arrange backup options for data and power interruptions. USP was re-accredited by WSCUC, a higher-education accrediting body, for eight years from July 2025 through June 2033. Programme or professional accreditation is separate. An employer, regulator or receiving university decides whether an external or foreign qualification is recognised for its purpose, and a qualification does not automatically create a professional licence, employment entitlement or migration right. Keep the certificate, transcript and course descriptions for later verification. Graduates may seek work in the Kiribati public service, state-owned entities, private companies, non-governmental organisations or churches, or continue to postgraduate or overseas study. The USP Campus reports that about 80% of graduates are absorbed by government or state-owned employers, but this is an indicative campus figure and does not guarantee a job. There is no evidence of a universal tertiary grant, guaranteed employment, a single national admission portal or automatic recognition of every overseas qualification. Current programmes, intakes, fees, scholarship quotas and conditions must be checked with the responsible provider or authority.
