Religion in Saudi Arabia

Islam is the central religious tradition of Saudi Arabia, and most Saudi citizens are Muslim. Islam influences worship, the weekly rhythm, festivals, family life, charity, food practices, and many social customs. The five daily prayers are an important part of religious life. Mosques are places of prayer and community, and people may organize their day around prayer times. Makkah is the direction and destination of the Hajj pilgrimage, while Madinah is closely connected with the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Both cities hold special significance for Muslims. Hajj and Umrah are pilgrimages performed by Muslims. Hajj takes place at a defined time in the Islamic calendar, while Umrah can be performed at other times, subject to the arrangements and rules that apply. Ramadan is a month of fasting from dawn to sunset for many Muslims. Daily schedules, meals, work patterns, family gatherings, and evening activity may change during this month. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are major Islamic celebrations. Families may pray, visit relatives, share meals, give gifts, and support people in need. Saudi Muslims include different schools, regional traditions, and personal levels of observance. The country also has residents from many religious backgrounds, though public behavior is shaped by the Islamic setting. Visitors should show care around mosques, Qurans, prayer, fasting, religious conversations, and holy places. If you are unsure, ask a suitable local person or follow the instructions at the site.
