Employment in Kuwait means doing paid work for an employer under an agreed job and contract. The contract normally explains the role, pay, working time, leave, and how the employment can end. The main work areas are the public sector, private companies, family businesses, domestic work, and self-employment or licensed business activity. Public-sector work is especially important for Kuwaiti citizens, while private companies employ both citizens and many expatriates. A foreign worker usually needs an employer to arrange the work authorization and residence process. This is commonly connected with the kafala, or sponsorship, system.
