Friendship in Laos

Lao uses terms such as ເພື່ອນ and ໝູ່ເພື່ອນ for friend and friends, with regional and language-group variations. Repeated contact can develop into a friendship when people choose to stay in contact and support each other. Meetings, visits, phone calls, messaging, social media, shared activities, empathy and peer listening help maintain the relationship. Family and community often provide major psychosocial support, while professional mental-health and psychosocial services may be used less because of stigma and limited access to trained workers. Friendship can continue across distance through digital contact, but rural connectivity, affordability and service quality vary. Migration, including migration to Thailand, can reduce contact frequency or make communication less regular. Typical costs are personal expenses for data, calls, transport, meetings and food; Laos has no official friendship fee or fixed duration. A private friendship is different from a formal association under Articles 121–124 of the Lao Civil Code. A formal association has rules, organs, membership and legal-person status, whereas friendship does not create a registered status or contract. A friendship creates no friendship-specific duty of financial support, exclusivity, care, loyalty or continuation. General rights to freedom, reputation, honor and privacy still apply, and serious violations may lead to requests for prevention or restoration and, where applicable, compensation under the Civil Code. Loans, contracts, property and other transactions between friends remain separate legal matters. People under 18 generally need a parent’s or guardian’s agreement for civil acts, apart from age-appropriate everyday acts; ordinary contact with a friend has no separately evidenced consent requirement. Money transfers, contracts and risky activities involving a minor require separate care. When a friendship becomes unsafe, a person can seek a calm discussion, set boundaries, pause contact, block communication or end the relationship. Retaliation and violence are not acceptable responses. For violence, gender-based violence, exploitation, privacy threats or child-protection risks, use general protection and legal channels rather than looking for a friendship procedure. LYU Helpline 1554 is described in the 2023 Child-Protection SOP as free and available 24/7 for psychological and psychosocial support, identification and referral for adolescents and young people. LWU 1362 provides reporting and advice for violence and trafficking and free legal aid for violence survivors. Depending on the case and location, a Village Child Protection Network, Village Authority, LWU or Labour and Social Welfare volunteer, or the relevant health, education, labour, social-welfare or justice authority may help. Availability must be checked locally. Peer-support programs such as LYU activities, Youth Champions, Project Sinxay and community clubs offer opportunities for contact and support, but they are not friendship authorities or substitutes for crisis and specialist care. Friendship is especially relevant for young people in Laos: UNICEF reports that 59% of the population is under 25, and Project Sinxay has reached more than 1,000 young people in Vientiane, Savannakhet, Luang Prabang and Xiengkhouang.
