History in Laos

Archaeological evidence shows that people lived in the territory of present-day Laos long before written records. The Plain of Jars is one of the best-known remains from these early periods, although its original purpose and the society that created it are still studied through archaeology and related evidence. The kingdom of Lan Xang, meaning “Million Elephants,” was founded by Fa Ngum in 1353. It became a major political power in mainland Southeast Asia and helped establish Theravada Buddhism, Lao court traditions and regional networks. Its rulers governed from changing centers, including Luang Prabang and Vientiane. Lan Xang later divided into separate Lao kingdoms, which competed with one another and came under pressure from Siam, Burma and Vietnam. France established control over Laos in the late nineteenth century. In 1893, Siam accepted French authority over territories east of the Mekong, and Laos became part of French Indochina. French administration changed borders, government institutions and economic connections, while local rulers and communities continued to exercise influence in many areas. The colonial period also shaped the development of modern Lao national identity. During the Second World War, Japan displaced French authority for a short period. After the war, Lao nationalists formed the Lao Issara movement and opposed the return of French rule. Laos gained increasing autonomy before independence was recognized in 1953 and confirmed through the wider settlement of the First Indochina War in 1954. The following decades brought civil war and extensive foreign involvement. The Pathet Lao, a communist movement allied with North Vietnam, fought the Royal Lao Government. The Vietnam War affected Laos through military operations, supply routes and widespread aerial bombardment, especially in areas connected with the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Unexploded ordnance from this period remains a danger in several parts of the country and continues to affect agriculture, infrastructure and rural life. In 1975, the Pathet Lao took power, the monarchy was abolished and the Lao People's Democratic Republic was established. The Lao People's Revolutionary Party became the central political force. Historical interpretation in Laos draws on archaeological remains, Lao and regional chronicles, colonial records, oral histories and wartime documentation; these sources do not always describe events from the same perspective.
