Nature in Laos

Laos combines the Annamite Range, northern highlands, Mekong lowlands and floodplains, wetlands, karst and cave systems, and several monsoon forest types. Its biodiversity includes more than 247 mammals, about 166 reptiles and amphibians, around 700 birds and 90 bats, including the saola, Asian elephant, tiger and other threatened species. Laos uses Conservation Forest as its legal term for a protected area, but access, local use and enforcement vary by protected area, province, district and village.
