Employment in Latvia

Employment creates a formal relationship between an employee and an employer. In Latvia, this relationship is known as darba attiecības and is normally based on a written darba līgums. The contract should identify the parties, workplace, occupation, duties, pay, and working arrangements. It may also describe probation, benefits, confidentiality, remote work, and other agreed conditions. An employee performs work under the employer’s organization and instructions. This distinguishes employment from independent business activity, where a person usually controls how the service is delivered and carries more commercial risk. Pay is commonly discussed as a gross amount before employee deductions. The amount received in the bank account is net pay after applicable payroll deductions, so applicants should clarify which figure an offer uses. Employers organize working time, rest, leave, safety, and payroll records. Employees must perform agreed duties carefully, follow lawful workplace rules, and protect the employer’s property and confidential information. Employment may be open-ended or fixed-term where a temporary arrangement is appropriate. A probation period may be agreed so that both sides can assess whether the job is suitable. Ending employment normally requires a recognized basis and a documented process. The applicable steps depend on whether the employee resigns, the parties agree to separate, a fixed term ends, or the employer initiates termination. Latvian is important in many workplaces, especially in public-facing and regulated roles. English and Russian may also be useful in particular sectors, but language expectations depend on the job and must be checked before accepting it.
