Labor law in Latvia

Latvian labor law governs work performed under an employment relationship. Its central framework is commonly known as the Darba likums, or Labor Law, alongside rules on workplace safety, social protection, and dispute resolution. An employment contract, called a darba līgums, normally identifies the parties, job, workplace, pay, and other essential conditions. The written contract helps distinguish an employee from a genuinely independent service provider. Employees receive basic protections concerning payment, rest, leave, health and safety, privacy, and equal treatment. An employer may direct the work, but instructions and workplace rules must respect the contract and the law. Different arrangements can include open-ended work, fixed-term work, part-time work, remote work, and temporary agency work. Special conditions may apply to young workers, parents, workers with disabilities, and other protected groups. Employment conditions may also be shaped by internal rules and a koplīgums, or collective agreement. Employees can be represented by a trade union or elected representatives where the relevant conditions are met. An employment relationship can end by agreement, employee resignation, employer notice, or another legally recognized ground. The reason, documents, procedure, and final payments matter, especially when an employer ends the relationship. Workplace disagreements often begin with a written request to the employer. Depending on the issue, help may also come from employee representatives, the State Labour Inspectorate, or a court. Latvian labor law provides minimum protection rather than a complete solution to every workplace problem. The contract, factual working relationship, collective arrangements, and evidence must be considered together.
