Pets in Latvia

The Latvian word for pets is mājdzīvnieki. Owners are responsible for an animal's food, shelter, health, behaviour, and effect on other people and animals. Dogs and some other animals may need identification and registration under the system that applies to them. A veterinarian can check a microchip and explain the animal's recorded details. Vaccination and parasite control protect the pet, people, livestock, and wildlife. Keep a clear veterinary record and discuss prevention appropriate to the animal's lifestyle. International pet travel requires planning because identification, vaccination, documents, and transport conditions must fit the journey. Requirements can differ by animal type and destination. Housing agreements may restrict pets or require the owner's approval. Confirm permission before moving an animal into rented accommodation. Dogs should be controlled in public, and leads or muzzles may be required in particular situations. Owners must prevent attacks, persistent disturbance, and uncontrolled breeding. Waste should be collected and disposed of properly. Shared entrances, gardens, lifts, paths, and play areas require special consideration for neighbours. Latvia has cold winters, warm periods, ticks, traffic, and wildlife risks. Adapt shelter, exercise, identification, and parasite prevention to the season and location. Abandoning an animal is not an acceptable solution. If care becomes impossible, contact a veterinarian, municipality, shelter, or responsible welfare organisation early.
