Religion in Latvia

Latvia has no single religious practice shared by everyone. Christianity is historically prominent, but belief and participation differ widely between individuals, families, regions, and generations. Lutheran traditions have played an important role in many Latvian-speaking communities, especially in parts of northern and western Latvia. Roman Catholic life is particularly visible in Latgale and in important pilgrimage traditions. Orthodox Christianity is present among Latvian and Russian-speaking believers. Old Believer communities also have a long history in Latvia and maintain distinct worship practices and community traditions. Baptists, other Protestant groups, Jewish communities, Muslims, and people belonging to additional faiths form part of the country’s religious landscape. Some communities are small but historically or locally significant. Dievturība is a Latvian religious and cultural movement inspired by pre-Christian Latvian folklore and traditional songs. Interest in nature spirituality and seasonal customs can also exist without formal membership in a religion. Many residents do not attend worship regularly or do not identify with a religion. Others may celebrate Christmas, Easter, baptisms, weddings, or funerals mainly as family and cultural customs. Places of worship can serve spiritual, social, musical, charitable, and heritage functions. Visitors should follow local rules, especially during services, prayer, and ceremonies. Freedom of conscience allows people to hold, change, express, or reject religious beliefs. Respectful coexistence depends on not assuming a person’s faith from their name, language, ethnicity, clothing, or region.
