Taxes in Latvia

Taxes are called nodokļi in Latvian. Latvia uses national and municipal taxes to fund services and social protection, while different rules apply to individuals, employers, and businesses. The State Revenue Service is Valsts ieņēmumu dienests, commonly shortened to VID. Its electronic system, known as EDS, is widely used for declarations, messages, registrations, and tax information. Employment income normally involves personal income tax and state social insurance contributions. Employers usually calculate and transfer major payroll amounts, but workers should still check payslips and personal records. Self-employed people and businesses generally have broader duties. These can include registration, bookkeeping, invoices, declarations, social contributions, and keeping business money clearly documented. Value added tax, called pievienotās vērtības nodoklis or PVN, applies to many goods and services. It is usually included in consumer prices, while registered businesses handle it through invoices and returns. Other relevant areas can include property-related taxes, vehicle taxes, capital gains, investment income, rental income, gifts, and cross-border income. The correct treatment depends on the type of transaction rather than the name a person gives it. Tax residence is especially important for people who move between countries or work remotely. Citizenship alone does not settle every tax question, and two countries may both need to be considered. Good records are the foundation of correct tax reporting. Contracts, invoices, payslips, bank statements, purchase evidence, and prior declarations help show what happened and when.
