Pets in Lebanon

Dogs, cats, birds, fish, and other animals are kept as pets in Lebanon. The practical experience differs between a city apartment, a village home, and a property with outdoor space. Owners are responsible for food, clean water, shelter, exercise, hygiene, and medical care. Heat, traffic, balconies, generators, poisonous materials, and unsecured outdoor areas can create local hazards. Veterinary clinics and pet shops are concentrated mainly in larger populated areas. Owners living farther away should identify a veterinarian and emergency transport plan before a problem occurs. Preventive care commonly includes veterinary examinations, vaccination, parasite control, dental attention, and sterilization where appropriate. The veterinarian should adapt the plan to the animal’s species, age, health, and lifestyle. Identification helps a lost animal return home. A collar tag, current telephone number, clear photographs, and a microchip where available provide several layers of protection. Apartment rules and landlord conditions may restrict animals. Barking, waste, smells, shared entrances, lifts, and fear of dogs can also affect relations with neighbors. Street dogs and cats are present in many areas, and rescue groups or volunteers may help them. An unfamiliar animal can be frightened, injured, protective, or ill, so approach carefully and seek experienced help. Travel with an animal requires early planning. Carriers, identification, health documents, vaccinations, transport-company rules, and destination requirements should be confirmed for the particular journey. Emergency plans should include evacuation, temporary care, medicine, food, water, and a secure carrier or leash. Never assume that a shelter, hotel, driver, or evacuation service will accept an animal.
