Private employment contracts in Libya should be written in Arabic, approved by the competent authority and prepared in three copies for the employer, worker and Employment Office. Registration has no fee. A missing written contract does not automatically eliminate a claim, because general evidence may establish the employment relationship. Probation lasts 30 actual working days. A fixed-term contract may last up to two years and may be renewed once; a further continuation becomes indefinite. A clause that gives the worker less protection than the law is void. An employer may change the assigned work temporarily for an emergency or force majeure, or where the change creates no substantial difference. The employer keeps a worker file containing identity information, the contract, pay, leave, allowances, duties and disciplinary measures.
