Apprenticeship in Lithuania

Vocational education and training in Lithuania prepares people for a particular occupation. The Lithuanian term is profesinis mokymas, and an apprenticeship is commonly called pameistrystė. The system is open to young people choosing a path after school and to adults who want a first or new qualification. Entry conditions depend on the programme and the learner’s previous education. Lithuania does not place every vocational learner in a classic company-led apprenticeship. Many learners enrol through a vocational education and training provider and combine classroom lessons with practical training. In pameistrystė, a larger part of learning happens in a real workplace. The employer supports practical learning, while an education provider helps organise theory, assessment, and the recognised programme. Programmes cover areas such as construction, manufacturing, transport, services, information technology, hospitality, health support, and crafts. The available occupations differ by provider and region. A programme may lead to a recognised vocational qualification. Some routes also allow learners to continue general education, which can keep later study options open. The usual process includes choosing an occupation, checking entry requirements, applying to a provider, completing theory and practice, and passing the required assessments. Workplace safety, attendance, and practical competence are important throughout. Vocational learning can provide direct work experience and a clear route into employment. Its limits are that places depend on local programmes and employers, and a narrow qualification may need later updating when technology or jobs change. A learner should compare the occupation, qualification, practical training arrangement, language of instruction, and future progression before enrolling. These details matter more than the programme name alone.
