Disasters in Lithuania

A disaster is an event that seriously threatens many people, property, essential services, or the environment. In Lithuania, disaster management forms part of civil protection, commonly called civilinė sauga. Possible emergencies include storms, flooding, forest or building fires, extreme temperatures, transport accidents, industrial incidents, power failures, and dangerous pollution. Rare but serious security-related emergencies are also covered by civil protection planning. Lithuanian state institutions, municipalities, emergency services, medical services, and infrastructure operators share responsibilities. The exact lead organization depends on the type and location of the emergency. Public authorities may warn people through sirens, mobile messages, radio, television, official announcements, or instructions delivered by local services. A siren is a signal to seek reliable information, not a complete instruction by itself. People may be told to remain indoors, close windows, leave an unsafe area, follow an evacuation route, or move to a designated shelter or safer building. The correct action depends on the danger, so official instructions matter more than rumors or general advice. The common emergency number in Lithuania is 112. It connects callers with the appropriate emergency response, but it should be used for real and immediate danger rather than general information. Households can reduce risk by keeping water, durable food, medicines, lighting, a radio, power banks, warm clothing, hygiene items, and copies of important information ready. Supplies should match the needs of children, older people, disabled people, and pets. Preparedness cannot prevent every disaster or guarantee immediate assistance. It can nevertheless protect health, reduce confusion, and help emergency workers concentrate on people in greatest danger.
