Family in Lithuania

The Lithuanian word for family is “šeima.” It can mean parents and children living together, but people may also use it more broadly for close relatives and committed partners. Relatives are called “giminės.” Grandparents, adult siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins may remain important even when they live in separate homes or countries. There is no single Lithuanian family model. People may live alone, as a couple, with children, in a blended family, with relatives, or as a single parent household. Family life often combines privacy with mutual responsibility. Relatives may provide childcare, care for older people, help with repairs, share food, or support someone during illness and unemployment. Regular contact may happen through visits, telephone calls, messages, and shared meals. Christmas, Easter, birthdays, weddings, funerals, and cemetery visits can bring wider families together. Respect for older relatives can be important, but younger adults commonly expect to make their own choices. Differences about partners, work, money, parenting, religion, or where to live may require calm boundaries. Many Lithuanians have relatives living abroad because of migration. Family bonds may therefore involve travel, video calls, parcels, remittances, and plans made across several countries. Family can offer belonging, care, shared memory, and practical security. It can also bring pressure, conflict, unequal care duties, or unwanted involvement, so closeness should not remove anyone’s right to safety and personal choice.
