History in Lithuania

Lithuanians belong to the Baltic cultural and linguistic region. Early communities lived around forests, rivers, farms, and Baltic trade routes before a unified Lithuanian state emerged. The medieval Grand Duchy of Lithuania, called Lietuvos Didžioji Kunigaikštystė, became a large and diverse state. It included people with different languages, faiths, and local traditions. Lithuania later formed a close political union with Poland. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth created a shared state while Lithuanian institutions and identity continued in changing forms. Partitions by neighbouring empires ended the Commonwealth, and most Lithuanian lands came under Russian imperial rule. Language, Catholic practice, education, and rural culture became important ways of preserving identity. A national revival strengthened Lithuanian-language publishing and political organization. Lithuania declared an independent republic after the First World War and built its own state institutions. The Second World War brought Soviet and Nazi occupations, mass violence, the Holocaust, deportations, repression, and armed resistance. Jewish life, once central to many Lithuanian towns and to Vilnius, was devastated. Lithuania remained under Soviet rule for decades, although cultural memory and hopes for statehood survived. The reform movement Sąjūdis helped mobilize society, and Lithuania restored its independence as the Soviet system weakened. Modern Lithuania treats statehood, language, democratic choice, and remembrance as closely connected. Historical interpretation can still be sensitive because families and communities experienced war, occupation, resistance, and loss differently.
