Immigration law in Lithuania

Lithuanian immigration law separates short visits from longer residence. A lawful entry does not automatically give a person the right to live or work in Lithuania for every purpose. Citizens of the European Union and certain related countries generally use free-movement rules rather than the ordinary visa system. They may still need to register their residence when staying longer, and their non-EU family members may need a residence document. Other foreign nationals commonly need a visa, residence permit, or another recognized status. A residence permit is called leidimas gyventi in Lithuanian and may be temporary or permanent, depending on the legal basis. Common residence grounds include employment, study, family unity, business activity, and protection. Each route asks the applicant to prove both identity and the genuine purpose of residence. The Migration Department is a central authority for many migration applications and residence documents. Lithuanian diplomatic missions, border authorities, employment institutions, and courts may also have roles in particular procedures. Permission to reside and permission to work are connected but not always identical. Before starting employment, the worker and employer should confirm that the person’s status allows the planned job and whether an additional labor-market step applies. Applications usually require a valid travel document, a clear legal basis, and supporting records. Foreign public documents may need authentication and translation, while personal details should match across every document. A permit can be refused, withdrawn, or allowed to expire if its conditions are not met. Family, work, or study changes should therefore be reported and addressed before they create a gap in lawful status. Permanent residence, long-term status, and citizenship are separate stages with different conditions. Time spent in Lithuania may matter, but continuity, type of status, absences, language, and other requirements can also affect the result.
