Language in Lithuania

Lithuanian belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. Its closest living relative is Latvian, but the two languages are different and are not automatically understood by each other’s speakers. The Lithuanian alphabet uses Latin letters with additional marks. Letters such as ą, č, ę, ė, į, š, ų, ū, and ž represent important spelling distinctions and should not be treated as decoration. Lithuanian grammar changes word endings to show relationships within a sentence. Nouns have grammatical cases, while verbs change for person and time, so learners benefit from studying whole phrases rather than isolated words. Stress and vowel length can affect pronunciation and meaning. Beginners do not need perfect speech immediately, but careful listening and repetition help others understand them. First names are common in friendly settings, while formal address is safer when meeting someone older or in an official role. Polish, Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Yiddish heritage, Karaim, Romani, sign languages, and other languages form part of Lithuania’s social landscape. Their use varies by family, region, generation, and community. English is widely studied and is often useful in cities, higher education, tourism, and international workplaces. It should not be assumed that every person can or wishes to use it. Lithuanian is essential for full participation in many public, educational, and professional settings. Translation, interpretation, and language learning can bridge gaps, but official or important information should always be checked for exact meaning.
