Pets in Lithuania

A pet may be called an augintinis in Lithuanian. Dogs and cats are common companions, while other animals may need specialised care or be subject to different rules. Responsible care includes suitable food, clean water, exercise, shelter, social contact, and prompt veterinary treatment. A veterinarian is called a veterinarijos gydytojas. Identification and registration help connect an animal to its keeper. Microchipping is central for many dogs and cats, especially when ownership or international movement must be documented. A pet passport records identity and important veterinary information for eligible animals travelling under European arrangements. It does not replace every health, vaccination, transport, or destination requirement. Dogs should be controlled in public, and local signs may set rules for leads, access, or waste. Owners should prevent bites, disturbance, damage, and contact with wildlife. Rental agreements and building rules may affect pet keeping. Permission to keep an animal does not remove the owner's duty to prevent noise, odour, damage, or danger to neighbours. Veterinary clinics provide preventive care, treatment, and advice about parasites and vaccination. Emergency availability varies, so identify a suitable option before it is needed. Animal shelters are often called gyvūnų globos namai. Adoption can offer an animal a home, but the adopter should first consider long-term cost, housing, travel, training, and the animal's individual needs.
