Friendships in North Macedonia are mainly informal. Local terms include пријателство for a relationship between friends based on mutual affection, respect and trust, другарство and другарување for friendship and spending time together, and дружба for friendship or socialising. познанство means an acquaintance and describes a less personal relationship. People can meet through schools, universities, workplaces, neighbourhoods, sports and cultural groups, religious communities, leisure activities, youth organisations, volunteering, non-formal education and online networks. Access is generally informal. Time, travel, participation fees and other costs depend on the activity and provider; North Macedonia has no national standard for these matters. Language, internet access and local availability can affect digital and in-person contact, especially after moving, migration or separation from family and friends. Friendship is voluntary and reciprocal. It creates no general legal duties and cannot normally be enforced as a legal claim. Privacy, consent and non-discrimination remain relevant in personal contact, while a school, club, workplace, youth organisation or online group may impose its own binding rules. A friendship can continue through messages and calls, change through distance, or end through direct communication, a period of distance, ending contact or blocking. North Macedonia has no formal procedure for dissolving a friendship and no unified public service for long-distance friendships. Youth services provide the clearest organised ways to meet new people. The National Youth Strategy 2023–2027 covers young people aged 15 to 29 and emphasises participation, inclusion, multiculturalism, interculturalism, interethnic association and access for rural and disabled youth. The Ministry of Social Policy, Demography and Youth is responsible for youth policy and research, while the Agency for Youth and Sport supports strategy implementation. Municipalities may involve a youth office, local youth council or Youth Centre, and NGOs, youth organisations, sport providers and cultural providers offer practical activities. The strategy provides for at least one Youth Centre in each municipality within five years, but actual availability, opening times and quality need to be checked locally. A Center for Social Work can provide public social-protection support for citizens, families and groups, but it is not a general friendship counselling service.
