Pets in Macedonia

Pets covered by this area include dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, ornamental fish, amphibians, reptiles, rodents and domestic rabbits. When a litter is bred, the birth should be reported to an authorized veterinary clinic, and young animals should be identified and registered before placement with holder details. No current nationwide index of pet shops or breeders, uniform purchase contract requirement or current official purchase-price table is documented. The Food and Veterinary Agency, known as FVA, provides central veterinary, identification and animal-welfare oversight. A dog receives a permanent microchip once and is registered in the pet module of the animal-health information system. The owner receives a pet passport and must report a change of holder, death, loss or sale to an authorized veterinary society. FVA information also calls for dogs to be reported at least once a year at an authorized veterinary practice at their permanent place of stay. Cat registration practice is less clearly documented nationwide. FVA guidance for dogs and cats includes rabies vaccination or revaccination at least once a year and treatment against external and internal parasites. A veterinarian should examine an animal promptly after a significant health or behavior change. Daily care includes species-appropriate food, constant access to fresh water and a body condition that supports good health. Dogs should be socialized positively, receive daily exercise and not remain permanently tethered. Tail docking, ear cropping, removal of the fifth toe, devocalization, declawing and removal of teeth for non-medical reasons are prohibited interventions. A dog outside private property must normally be kept on a leash unless it is in a designated off-leash area. The entrance to a yard or other property holding a dog should display a visible warning sign. A dangerous dog must stay in a secured area or be tethered, use a leash and muzzle in public, and be accompanied by an adult. A socialization test may be conducted by the FVA or an authorized person. Municipalities and the municipalities within the City of Skopje handle the collection of stray or unregistered dogs in public places, including registered dogs found without a keeper. ЈП „Лајка“ is the functional municipal service for stray dogs in Skopje. Its current adoption information states that adoption is available Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00; dogs are treated, sterilized and vaccinated, adoption is free, and the adopter completes a form and undertakes responsible ownership. These arrangements should not be assumed to apply in other municipalities. No equivalent nationwide public surrender system is documented for cats or other pets, so private owners should not release an animal into public space. Loss, death and sale still require the relevant database update where the animal is registered. Entering North Macedonia with a pet for non-commercial purposes normally requires that the animal travel with its owner or a responsible person, involve no ownership transfer and remain within the limit of five animals. Dogs, cats and ferrets generally need to be over three months old, permanently identified and accompanied by either the required passport or a veterinary health certificate, depending on the country of origin. Animals from countries outside the relevant listed groups may need a rabies antibody test taken at least three months before travel. Other pets may require a clinical examination at least 24 hours before departure; birds additionally need a veterinary health certificate and a declaration from the owner. More than five animals is allowed only for qualifying events such as competitions, exhibitions, sports or training and brings additional conditions. Travel from North Macedonia to the European Union requires the microchip before the rabies vaccination, a first rabies vaccination no earlier than twelve weeks of age and a waiting period of at least 21 days. An EU animal-health certificate must be issued by an official veterinarian no more than ten days before arrival, together with a written declaration that the movement is non-commercial. The limit is five animals, and arrival must take place through a designated travellers' point of entry. North Macedonia is currently listed by the EU among countries for which a rabies antibody titre is not generally required; other pet species remain subject to the rules of the destination country. Microchipping is a one-time cost, while veterinary visits, vaccines, passports, certificates and travel charges vary by practice and service. No current uniform national veterinary tariff was located. A 2019 FVA cost indication gave approximately MKD 1,500–2,000 for sterilising a male cat or dog and MKD 2,600–5,000 for sterilising a female dog, depending on size; these figures are historical and should not be treated as current prices. No nationwide pet cemetery was documented.
