Family life in Madagascar includes legally registered households, customary unions, extended-family arrangements and kin-based care. A customary union does not automatically have the legal effect of a civil marriage. A traditional ceremony receives civil-marriage status only after civil registration. The legal marriage age is 18 for both sexes; a person under 18 may marry only on serious grounds with authorization from the Tribunal de Première Instance, parental or responsible-authority involvement and the child's consent. Bigamy is prohibited. Child marriage remains a serious risk: in 2021, 39% of women and 11% of men aged 20 to 24 had married or entered a union before age 18, with rates reaching 66% in Atsimo Andrefana.
Family in Madagascar
Families in Madagascar combine formal legal relationships with customary practices, extended-kin support and community care. Marriage, birth, adoption, divorce and death can acquire legal effect through civil-status registration, while informal arrangements do not always create the same rights. Access to protection, care and financial support varies by region, income, distance and local services.
