Safety in Malawi

Safety in Malawi requires preparation for both natural hazards and crime. Floods, droughts, cyclones and landslides can disrupt livelihoods, transport, water, electricity and communication, while theft, break-ins, robbery and other offences create personal and property risks. A practical safety plan combines emergency preparedness with everyday crime prevention and reliable reporting.

Crime

Crime in Malawi includes theft, break-ins, robbery, assault, sexual and child-related offences, vehicle theft, murder, and online or financial scams. The Malawi Police Service (MPS) recorded 45,490 cases in 2023, with general theft and break-ins forming the largest shares, although registered cases do not measure every incident. Safer choices include securing valuables, avoiding isolated travel at night, reporting to a Police Station or patrol officer, and using victim, child-protection, or cyber-incident support when needed.
