Apprenticeship in Malaysia

In Malaysia, apprenticeship is not one single route that covers every occupation. It is mainly organised through TVET, which prepares people for practical and technical work in areas such as engineering, construction, hospitality, vehicle service, information technology, and business operations. A common local term is latihan kemahiran, meaning skills training. Another important model is the Sistem Latihan Dual Nasional, or SLDN, where learning is shared between a workplace and a training centre. The learner develops job skills in a real work setting and studies the supporting knowledge in a classroom or workshop. The Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran, known as JPK, is associated with the national skills certification system. A learner may work toward the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia, or SKM, at an appropriate level. The certificate is based on demonstrated occupational skills, not only on written examinations. A typical path begins with choosing an occupation, checking entry requirements, and joining a recognised programme. The learner then attends practical sessions, follows workplace instructions, records progress, and completes assessments. Some programmes are mainly institution-based, while dual programmes place a larger part of learning with an employer. Apprentices usually learn through demonstrations, supervised practice, job tasks, safety training, and feedback. Good programmes explain who supervises the learner, how skills are assessed, and what certificate or progression route follows completion. The main benefit is early contact with real work. Learners can build confidence, useful habits, and a portfolio of tasks while discovering whether an occupation suits them. Employers also gain a way to develop workers who understand their tools, processes, and safety duties. The limits are important too. Training quality can vary, and some apprenticeships may offer narrow experience if the workplace gives only simple tasks. Practical training does not remove the need for reading, mathematics, communication, digital skills, and lifelong learning. After a skills qualification, a person may enter employment, progress to a higher skills level, move into a diploma route, or specialise through further training. Recognition by an employer and the quality of the actual assessment both matter when comparing programmes.
