Shopping in Maldives

Everyday shopping in Maldives is concentrated in Malé and Hulhumalé but also relies on local island shops, STO regional outlets and agents. STO People's Choice in Malé sells groceries, household goods, pharmacy products, home appliances and electronics. The STO network helps distribute staple goods beyond Malé, although an outer-island shop may not carry the same assortment or stock. Redwave is another supermarket chain. AguMagu compares daily prices for 117 items across 224 outlets in 16 atolls and shows item or island comparisons, ten-day trends and shopping lists. Personal and household goods include toiletries, diapers, baby food, baby lotion, shampoo, pharmacy products and cleaning items. Check the expiry date, packaging, label and condition before paying. Clothing is available through Malé shops and markets, local brands, souvenir shops, resort retailers, tailors and seamstresses. Custom clothing requires measurements and may involve a lead time; alteration and return terms depend on the seller. STO sells consumer electronics and appliances, while Redwave Online offers laptops, accessories, gaming products, appliances and small electronics. For technology, check the model, specifications, compatibility, serial number, warranty, accessories and receipt, and test the product where the seller permits it. Local online channels include eSTOre and Redwave Online. Before ordering, verify the seller's identity, listed price, stock, delivery island, warranty, exchange or return terms and whether the price includes the applicable charge. An online business registered with MIRA should prominently display its Taxpayer Identification Number and designated MIRA GST logo. Cross-border orders require separate checks with Customs because import restrictions, taxes, delivery time and loss risk can differ from local orders. Redwave states that grocery delivery is available in Malé and Hulhumalé. Its grocery same-day cutoff is 15:30; delivery is free above MVR 300 and costs MVR 15 below that amount. For household items and small electronics under 15 kg, the stated same-day cutoff is 16:30, with an additional weight-based fee and a nationwide delivery scope stated by the seller. Furniture and large electronics over 15 kg usually take about two to three weeks and are limited to Malé, Hulhumalé and boats. Check the package before signing for it, because the seller's policy determines how loss or damage after confirmation is handled. Report a defective or incorrect item through the seller's hotline or email. Redwave's stated exchange terms allow an item of equal or higher value and require the unused item to remain in its original condition. Prices are generally expressed in MVR, the Maldivian rufiyaa. Cards are widely used through point-of-sale terminals and bank online gateways; Maldives Monetary Authority data for 2024 recorded 80.8 million card transactions worth MVR 34.8 billion, with debit cards dominant. QR and mobile payments are also available, but acceptance differs by merchant and bank. Favara provides instant interbank payments around the clock through a Favara ID or a Favara Request in a bank app or internet-banking service. Keep the receipt, payment confirmation or transaction record, especially for online orders, deposits and warranty claims. The Consumer Protection Act 12/2020 has applied since 1 March 2021. Sellers should display prices. Packaged goods should show their content, weight or quantity, manufacture date, expiry date and usage directions. A receipt should identify the goods or service, quantity or type, price, purchase date and seller name and address. Sellers should disclose known defects before sale and should not sell expired or contaminated goods. Buyers can view or test goods where the circumstances allow. If goods do not conform and no specific contrary agreement applies, the buyer can seek a return within a reasonable time, a refund or a similar replacement. A service defect can require correction within a reasonable period, while a serious defect that cannot be corrected may support a claim for damages. A voluntary retailer return policy is separate from these conformity rights; the available evidence does not establish a general change-of-mind return right. Start a complaint with the seller and preserve the receipt, order details, payment record, delivery evidence, warranty, photographs and messages. If the seller does not resolve a shopping dispute, the Consumer Ombudsman's Office accepts complaints through its form, online portal or email. The Office can investigate and may award compensation or take enforcement action. The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport & Trade, Maldives Monetary Authority, MIRA, Customs and the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment & Energy have different responsibilities, so the relevant body depends on the issue. Maldives has controls on several single-use plastic products. The official materials list plastic shopping bags below 50 microns from 1 December 2022, selected small plastic packaging, cups, straws, cutlery, Styrofoam lunch boxes and small PET water or beverage containers. Reusable or long-life bags, refillable bottles and compliant compostable alternatives can reduce packaging waste. A 2026 laws listing includes a plastic-bag fee for GST-registered businesses; check the current Ministry or Environmental Protection Agency rules for the amount and exemptions. Island logistics and marine-waste concerns make low-packaging purchases and reusable bags practical choices where available.
