Friendship in Malta

A friendship develops when two people choose to spend time together and maintain a mutual connection. Shared activities, honest conversation and practical support can strengthen it, while unequal effort, repeated cancellations or disrespecting boundaries can weaken it. Friendship does not require constant contact, but both people usually need a reasonable sense of reliability and interest. In Malta, people can build friendships through workplaces, schools, sports clubs, voluntary activities, neighbourhood connections, cultural groups and online communities. The setting affects how often friends meet and what they share, but it does not determine the quality of the relationship. Some friendships are based on frequent informal meetings, while others depend on planned calls or messages because of work, study, family responsibilities or distance. Clear expectations reduce misunderstandings. Friends can discuss how often they want to meet, whether invitations are casual or firm, how they handle private information and what support they can realistically provide. If contact repeatedly causes pressure, humiliation or fear, reducing contact or ending the friendship can be appropriate.
