Mexico has several natural hazards because it lies near active tectonic zones, tropical storm paths, volcanoes, dry regions, and flood-prone areas. The danger is different in each state and city, so local warnings matter more than a single national checklist. Protección Civil is the main public system for disaster prevention and response in Mexico. It includes national, state, and municipal authorities, emergency services, shelters, warnings, evacuations, and public education. Earthquakes are especially important in many parts of Mexico. During strong shaking, protect your head and neck, move away from glass and heavy objects, and leave only when it is safe and authorities give instructions. Hurricanes and tropical storms can bring strong wind, heavy rain, storm surge, landslides, and flooding. Coastal and low-lying communities may need to prepare for evacuation, while inland communities may face blocked roads, power loss, and contaminated water. Floods, landslides, wildfires, volcanic ash, and tsunamis require different actions. Do not cross moving floodwater, avoid ash when possible, move away from unstable slopes, follow fire restrictions, and leave coastal areas after an official tsunami warning. Warnings may come through Protección Civil, local authorities, emergency broadcasts, phones, sirens, and community announcements. In some areas, an alerta sísmica can provide a short warning before strong earthquake waves arrive, but it cannot predict every earthquake. A Plan Familiar de Protección Civil sets out meeting places, escape routes, emergency contacts, responsibilities, and care for children, older people, disabled people, and animals. An emergency bag should contain water, basic food, medicines, documents or copies, a flashlight, a radio or charged power bank, and sturdy shoes. After a disaster, check for injuries and immediate dangers, turn off utilities only if you can do so safely, and use official information. Avoid damaged buildings, do not spread unconfirmed messages, and return home only after authorities say the area is safe. Preparation has limits because disasters can happen without much warning and public resources may be stretched. The safest first steps are to learn the hazards near your home, make a family plan, practice it, and keep essential supplies ready.
