Language in Moldova

Romanian is Moldova’s official state language, while Russian, Gagauz, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Romani have important regional or community roles. The 2024 census recorded both self-declared mother tongue and language usually spoken, so “Moldovan” is a census label rather than a separate official state language. Language access differs by region: Russian is widely used in cities, Gagauz in UTA Găgăuzia, and Bulgarian in Taraclia.
