Pets in Moldova

Pets in Moldova include privately kept dogs, cats, domesticated ferrets, birds, rodents, rabbits, reptiles, amphibians and ornamental aquatic animals. Veterinary supervision and travel documents have national rules, while adoption, shelter access, treatment and sterilisation depend strongly on the municipality. Owners of dogs, cats and ferrets should keep rabies vaccination current and prevent animals from roaming without supervision. Law No. 256/2025 will introduce broader welfare and ownership duties from 6 September 2027.
