History in Monaco

The earliest known local settlement is associated with the Grotte de l’Observatoire, where evidence covers approximately 400,000 to 200,000 years ago and includes Lower, Middle and Upper Paleolithic activity. Finds and research concern Homo erectus, Neanderthals and Homo sapiens, as well as Protoaurignacian, Aurignacian and Gravettian cultures, stone and bone tools, ochre, engravings and animal remains. Bronze Age burials and pottery are known from the Grottes des Spélugues and Bas-Moulins, while Le Castelleretto preserves evidence of a Ligurian fortified site. The Musée d’Anthropologie préhistorique de Monaco supports excavation, conservation, research and education. In antiquity, the rock and natural harbor had strategic value. Official accounts associate the area with Ligurians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. The name Monoïkos is commonly linked to the Phocaean colony of Massalia, probably in the sixth century BCE, but the identification of the name and settlement remains a question of sources and interpretation. Roman presence is supported by literary and archaeological evidence. Written local evidence becomes much thinner after the end of the Roman Empire. Medieval Monaco developed within Genoese power structures. Frederick I confirmed a Genoese sphere in 1162, and Henry IV transferred rights over the rock and harbor to Genoa in 1191 with a fortification obligation. Genoa received further rights in 1197, and construction of the fortress began in 1215 under Fulco del Castello. On 8 January 1297, François Grimaldi, known as Malizia, captured the fortress in disguise as a monk. This episode is a dynastic foundation narrative and should be read alongside other evidence rather than treated as the only historical perspective. Grimaldi rule became durable in 1314. Charles I is associated with the first seigneur title in 1331 or 1341, depending on the distinction between title and recognition. Menton joined the Grimaldi possessions in 1346 and Roquebrune in 1355. In the early modern period, Monaco's position was shaped by relations with France, the Holy Roman Empire, the papacy and Savoy. Official Palais accounts record recognition by France and Savoy in 1480, French recognition in 1512, and recognition by the emperor and pope in 1524. Honoré I held the Marquisate de Campagna from 1532 and maintained a Spanish alliance. Honoré II adopted the princely title in 1612 or 1614. The Traité de Péronne of 1641 established a French protection and alliance relationship and confirmed possessions including Valentinois, Carladez, Les Baux and Saint-Rémy. The palace changed from a fortress into a residence. Dynastic marriages and feudal ties connected Monaco with wider European politics. La Turbie was temporarily under Monaco from 1705 to 1713 before its cession under the Treaty of Utrecht, while Savoy imposed homage for Menton and Roquebrune in 1716. The French Revolution brought unrest and administrative change. In 1790, communal councils emerged in Monaco, Menton and Roquebrune. On 14 February 1793, Monaco was incorporated into the French Republic as a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes and was renamed Fort-Hercule. The palace was looted and used in connection with a hospital and poorhouse. The 1814 Treaty of Paris restored Grimaldi rights under French protection. From 1815 to 1860, arrangements connected Monaco with the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia within the post-Napoleonic order. Menton and Roquebrune separated in 1848. The Franco-Monegasque treaty of 2 February 1861 transferred those towns to France and confirmed Monaco's continuing sovereignty; this territorial history should not be confused with the present constitutional organization. Modern development accelerated after the creation of the Société des Bains de Mer and the casino in 1863, the customs union with France in 1865 and tax privileges for residents in 1869. Urban growth, tourism, finance and services reshaped the principality. Prince Albert I supported oceanographic expeditions, founded the Institut Océanographique in 1906 and promoted prehistoric and paleoanthropological research. The first Constitution, adopted on 5 January 1911, moved Monaco from absolute toward constitutional monarchy and created the Conseil National, protected rights and three communes. The Constitution was suspended during the First World War and reactivated in 1917. A 1918 treaty established a protection and friendship relationship with France. A temporary communal unification was later replaced by the three-commune model. The 1929 Grand Prix is a secondary contemporary historical event, while Rainier III's accession in 1949, Monaco's UNESCO membership and the 1956 marriage of Rainier III and Grace Kelly marked later political and media modernization. The 1962 Constitution strengthened constitutional rights and institutions, with further reform in 2002. Monaco joined the United Nations in 1993 as its 183rd member and the Council of Europe in 2004. Albert II succeeded in 2005. Monaco's history therefore combines dynastic continuity, French protection and neighborhood relations, constitutional development and international integration within a very small territory. The 2023 United Nations commemoration of thirty years of membership and the 2026 Sites historiques Grimaldi show how dynastic memory remains active across present-day French and Italian communities without restoring former feudal territories. There is no single national institution equivalent to a general history authority.
