Language in Monaco

French is Monaco’s official language and the main language of public administration, legislation, courts, education and state communication. Monegasque is the historic local language, taught and supported through schools and cultural programs, but it is not established as a co-equal official state language. Italian and English are frequently encountered in everyday, business and tourism settings, while formal multilingual administration remains limited and fragmented. Language needs therefore depend on whether a person is dealing with a public institution, school, court, cultural activity or daily life.
