People in Mozambique commonly build friendships through shared activities and repeated contact at school, in neighbourhoods and communities, through sport, culture, youth associations, school clubs, volunteering, mentoring groups and online communication. Portuguese is the official language, while national languages are also recognized; the language used between friends depends on location, family, school, work and community. Radio and local communication may use Portuguese or languages such as Makua, Mwani, Makonde or Kiswahili. No authority is responsible for approving or continuing a private friendship. The Ministry of Youth and Sport supports youth policy, the Instituto Nacional de Juventude supports youth organizations and civic participation, and the Conselho Nacional da Juventude coordinates and represents youth associations. Schools and teachers may support school clubs. These bodies provide spaces or programs that can help people meet, but they do not register friendships or create a legal claim to a friend. Youth policy commonly uses the age range 15 to 35, while access to a particular program depends on its provider, location and target group. School clubs are primarily for students. Friends maintain contact through meetings, visits, shared learning, work, sport, cultural activities, voice calls, SMS, messaging and mobile data. Access varies with network coverage, the availability of a device, income and distance. The Instituto Nacional de Comunicações de Moçambique regulates telecommunications and records mobile coverage and services including 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G. Transport, club or activity charges and communication costs may limit contact even when friendship itself has no fee. Friendship does not require surrendering privacy or personal boundaries. Participation should remain voluntary, and people may refuse pressure, violence, abuse, demands for private data or requests for intimate images. Online threats can justify blocking and reporting the account while preserving messages, account details and other evidence. Grooming, exploitation, violence, forced secrecy and demands for intimate images are safety concerns rather than ordinary friendship problems. Distance, displacement, school closures and climate-related events can interrupt contact and increase isolation, especially in crisis-affected parts of Cabo Delgado and Nampula and in other affected areas. Community radio, telephone contact, multipurpose centres, child-friendly spaces, community facilitators, peer support and mental-health and psychosocial support can provide functional contact or support when normal meetings are difficult. These services are usually program-based and are not friendship authorities. SAAJ provides free youth-friendly health and protection advice for people aged 11 to 24, but it is not a friendship service. For child protection or related safety concerns, Linha Fala Criança 116 provides free child assistance and referral, while Linha Verde 1458 provides information and protection referrals; police, SERNIC, a health facility or a CAI may also be appropriate depending on the case. A disagreement is usually handled through direct conversation, a period of distance, a contact pause, blocking or informal mediation. A friendship has no formal dissolution procedure and no state-guaranteed right to continue it. A trusted adult, teacher or social service can help when a child or teenager cannot handle a conflict or safety concern alone. Reliable national figures for the number, duration, size or ending rate of friendships in Mozambique are not available, so youth, communication, protection and program statistics should not be treated as friendship prevalence.
Friendship in Mozambique
Friendship in Mozambique is a freely chosen, personal and non-romantic relationship built through recurring mutual contact. The Portuguese terms amizade, amigo and amiga mean friendship, friend and female friend; colega means colleague and does not automatically mean friend. Friendship has no national registration, application process or official fee, although transport, activities, airtime and mobile data can create indirect costs.
