Safety in Mozambique

Safety focuses on disasters and crime.

Disasters

Disasters in Mozambique include cyclones, floods, droughts, fires, landslides, erosion, earthquakes, industrial incidents and other events that seriously affect people, infrastructure or essential services. The national disaster-risk system combines prevention, early warning, emergency response, humanitarian assistance and recovery through institutions including INGD, CENOE and UNAPROC. Risks and response capacity vary by province, district, landscape and event.

Crime

Crime in Mozambique includes theft, robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, gender-based violence, child abuse and digital fraud. Risks differ by place and situation: street crime is reported in Maputo and other cities, while remote areas, beaches, offshore islands and conflict-affected northern districts may have limited police access. Safe conduct, prompt reporting and suitable victim support reduce the consequences of an incident.
