Language in Namibia

Namibia’s language landscape—the way languages function in public life, education, media and daily life—is highly multilingual rather than centered on one language. English is the only constitutional official language and serves national law and formal institutions; an official language is the language assigned to those public functions. Oshiwambo varieties, Khoekhoegowab, Afrikaans, Otjiherero, Kavango and Zambezi languages, San languages and Namibian Sign Language also shape regional access, culture and participation. The language used in practice depends strongly on region, home, school, work and institution.
