Arrival in Nauru

There is no verified single arrival or registration centre in Nauru. Naoero Immigration within the Department of Justice and Border Control, Customs, Quarantine, accommodation providers, Nauru Airlines, the Republic of Nauru Hospital and local emergency services each handle different parts of arrival. General registration for newcomers has no verified central office or uniform deadline. Clarify any address, visa or employment reporting requirement directly with Immigration, the employer or the accommodation provider. Contact Naoero Immigration by email before booking. A visa application may require a completed form, the passport information page and, where relevant, an employer letter. Requirements depend on nationality and travel purpose, so confirm the applicable rules directly before paying for travel. The current visitor visa fee and processing time were not verified. A media visa is listed at AUD 8,000 and is non-refundable. The passport should remain valid for at least six months after the planned end of the trip, and Nauru Airlines may refuse carriage without the required visa, passport validity and transit, onward or return documents. Nauru Airlines connects Nauru with Brisbane, Naoero, Tarawa, Majuro, Pohnpei, Nadi, Suva and Kiritimati. Published schedules are only a planning guide because runway works and other changes can affect flights. Confirm the connection shortly before departure. Check-in is generally required three hours before departure, closes one hour before departure and requires arrival at the gate at least 30 minutes before departure. Arrange accommodation before travelling. Official information identifies two hotels and two private unit-style options, but current prices and availability were not verified. Keep the confirmed accommodation address available for the airline, Immigration and local contacts. There is no public transport in Nauru, so arrange a rental car or pickup service before arrival. The accommodation can provide a useful local base for transport, supplies and contact arrangements. At Nauru International Airport, Immigration checks the travel documents and may keep the passport for processing until later the same day or the following morning. Agree in advance with the airline, accommodation provider or another local contact how the passport will be collected. Follow the airport instructions for Customs and take luggage to the designated inspection area when requested. Declare unmanifested luggage when instructed. Quarantine and biosecurity officers check plant, animal and disease risks, so verify the current health and quarantine requirements with the authorities or airline before departure rather than relying on old COVID-19 rules. Arrange travel medical advice and an immunisation review at least eight weeks before departure. Travel insurance should cover treatment, medical evacuation and repatriation. The Republic of Nauru Hospital (RONH) in Yaren provides basic medical care, while serious illness or injury may require air transfer to Australia. Official information describes free treatment for citizens, but access and costs for non-citizens were not clearly published. Confirm the available care and payment conditions in advance, carry medicines in their original packaging and bring an adequate supply because medicines can be limited. The Australian dollar is legal tender in Nauru. Foreign exchange can be difficult, and cash remains common or preferred. Electronic card payments through EFTPOS are verified mainly in larger supermarkets and some other outlets, so carry a sufficient Australian-dollar reserve. Water and utilities also need advance checking. There has historically been no central piped-water supply; properties use tanks, rainwater and desalinated water. A reticulated fresh-water project is under development, but the connection process and costs for new arrivals were not centrally published. Ask the accommodation provider about drinking water, electricity, waste collection and deliveries before arrival. For emergencies, Nauru Police can be reached on 110, Nauru Emergency Services on 112 for fire and 113 for ambulance, and the National Disaster Risk Management Office on 595. RONH lists 8881124 as an emergency contact. Confirm the numbers with the accommodation provider or relevant authority after arrival because contact arrangements can change.
