Debt in Nepal

Debt in Nepal includes money owed to banks, microfinance institutions, cooperatives, moneylenders and other lenders, as well as public debt managed by the state. NLSS-IV 2022/23 found that 63.8% of households had at least one loan; relatives provided 42.5% of household loans, banks and financial institutions 22.4%, and moneylenders 11.4%. Missed repayments can affect credit records, trigger collateral enforcement and lead to court proceedings. Nepal has no evidenced single debt-counselling or general debt-relief office.
