Study in Nepal

Nepal’s higher education system includes 16 universities and seven autonomous academic or health institutions. According to the University Grants Commission (UGC) 2023/24 report, 1,432 campuses served about 633,053 students: 164 constituent campuses, 545 community campuses and 723 private campuses. A constituent campus is managed directly by its university. A community or private affiliated campus is managed separately but follows the curriculum and examination system of its affiliating university; it is not itself a separate degree-awarding university. Programs cover science and technology, education, management, social sciences and humanities, law, engineering, forestry, medicine, agriculture and animal science, Ayurveda and Sanskrit. Nepalese and English are both used for instruction. Regular campus study, annual programs and semester programs exist alongside open, distance and blended study through Nepal Open University, which uses an online learning system and regional study centres. A Bachelor’s program commonly takes at least three years and may take up to five years. A Master’s program commonly takes about two years, while a postgraduate diploma or MPhil may take about one and a half years. A PhD commonly takes three to five years. The actual structure, duration and progression rules belong to the university and program. Entry normally follows the sequence Grade 12, Higher Secondary education, +2 or an equivalent qualification for a Bachelor’s program; a Bachelor’s degree for a Master’s program; and a Master’s degree for an MPhil program. PhD admission requires a research-level qualification and compliance with the university’s rules. Faculties may add subject prerequisites, grade thresholds, document requirements and entrance tests. Selective or professional programs may use examinations such as KU KUCAT, TU IoST or IOE examinations, or CMAT. Admission is not automatic. Foreign qualifications and transfer applications may require equivalence or credit-transfer procedures. There is no single national tuition rate. Fees vary by university, program, campus, annual or semester structure, and whether the place is regular, subsidized or fee-paying. Constituent, community and private affiliated campuses can apply different fee arrangements. Application, entrance-examination, registration, library, learning-material, transport and housing costs may add to tuition. The current official fee notice from the relevant university or campus provides the reliable amount. The UGC coordinates higher education, provides grants, sets standards, supports scholarships and monitors institutions. Its quality-assurance and accreditation process applies to particular institutions rather than automatically covering every campus. Professional programs may also require recognition by the relevant professional council. The university or authorized institution awards the qualification, while the Office of the Controller of Examination commonly manages university examinations. Internal assessment, projects, theses and research requirements depend on the program. Scholarships and financial support can include UGC grants, regular or special scholarships, university or campus waivers, subsidized seats, and fellowships or research grants for MPhil and PhD study. Evidenced target groups include students with disabilities, Dalit students, economically deprived students, children of martyrs or conflict victims, Muslim women and Mukta Kamlari. Special support may also exist for MBBS and engineering study. Eligibility, quotas, renewal conditions and deadlines come from the current notice. Academic calendars, enrollment periods, examination schedules, result processing, advising, libraries, hostels, counseling, clubs, student participation, career support and research support differ by institution. After a Bachelor’s degree, a student may progress to a Master’s degree; later options can include an MPhil, PhD, research or regulated professional progression. Employment and migration may follow study, but professional licensing remains a separate process.
